SIBU, Oct 23: Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) Oscar Ling and Alice Lau will defend their Sibu and Lanang seats at the 15th General Election (GE15).
As for Bintulu, the party will field Tony Chiew, who was defeated in the 14th General Election (GE14) in 2018.
Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, in announcing the three candidates at the party’s Sibu branch fundraising dinner last night (Oct 22), urged voters to give their strongest support to the three candidates.
According to Chong, the trio were selected based on their excellent track record.
“They are chosen for their achievements and hard work in serving the people. I urge voters to support them,” he said.
Ling retained the seat in GE14 by a majority of 11,422 votes in a four-cornered fight.
He amassed 33,811 votes, while BN-SUPP (Barisan Nasional-Sarawak United Peoples’ Party) candidate, the late Datuk Andrew Wong Kee Yew, collected 22,389 votes.
Two others, Jamie Tiew Yen Huong of Sarawak Peace Party, polled 377 votes, while Simon Tiong Ing Tung of State Reform Party (STAR) lost his deposit with only 176 votes.
Meanwhile, Lau garnered 29,905 votes to retain the Lanang seat with a majority of 14,546 votes in a three-cornered fight in the last general election.
She beat SUPP’s Kelvin Kong, who collected 15,539 votes, while Sarawak Peace Party’s Priscilla Lau obtained 628 votes.
As for Chiew, he was defeated by Bintulu incumbent Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing after the PDP (Progressive Democratic Party) president secured a 7,022-vote majority.
Tiong received 27,076 votes in a battle against Chiew and Cheng Lea Phing of STAR. — DayakDaily
