KUCHING, Nov 12: “Culture must not remain in the past—it must live, breathe, and evolve with time,” says Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, praising the association for keeping traditions alive while embracing creativity.
Abang Johari, in his speech text delivered by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, said that the resilience and values of the Teochew community: their steadfastness, unity, and responsibility, have long contributed to Sarawak’s multicultural fabric and serve as an example for youths across the State.
“By bringing creativity into your traditions, whether through language, art, cuisine, or music, you ensure that the Teochew identity continues to thrive in the modern world,” he said at the 50th Anniversary Banquet of the Kuching Teochew Association Youth Section last night (Nov 11).
He noted that the Teochew community has been part of Sarawak’s story for more than 160 years.
“From the early settlers who toiled on this land, to the present generation, your community has contributed immensely to our State’s development, in business, education, culture, and public service,” he said.
To Abang Johari, their values, diligence, respect for learning, and love for community have become a part of the very fabric of Sarawak’s society.
He congratulated the association on its golden jubilee, commending its efforts to nurture youth leadership and maintain cultural vibrancy alongside Sarawak’s growth.
“Let this milestone inspire our youths to stand firm like iron: united, courageous, and visionary, and to continue enriching our community and our beloved Sarawak with pride and dedication,” he said.
The celebration marked not only half a century of Teochew youth spirit but also the ongoing role of young community members in bridging tradition and modernity, ensuring that culture evolves in step with Sarawak’s growth. — DayakDaily
