MIRI, Aug 11: A 78-year-old woman died after being attacked by a crocodile while searching for snails with her daughter near a tributary connected to Sungai Suai in Batu Niah here today.
According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), a call was received at 11.26am, prompting firefighters from the Batu Niah station to be deployed to the scene.
The victim, identified as Sambai Anggah, was in a boat while her daughter was in the river about one metre away when the daughter witnessed the crocodile attack her mother.
The crocodile then dragged the victim about 10 metres away from the boat before releasing her after villagers surrounded the area.
The victim was later found floating in the river by villagers and brought to the wharf.
Bomba personnel conducted a monitoring operation at the scene and found the situation safe and under control.
The victim was subsequently handed over to the police for further action.
The operation ended at 1.45pm. — DayakDaily
