KUCHING, Oct 15: Employees of a convenience store at Jalan Borneo were shocked when a crane lost control and crashed into the building today.
The incident which occurred around 3pm damaged the exterior structure of the four-storey block and nearly destroyed two supporting columns.
An employee identified as Aminudin said that he was not aware of the crash as he was carrying out his routine work at the counter of the 24-hour convenience store.
“I was not aware, but after hearing a loud sound, then I saw the crane. Luckily it struck the building columns outside,” he said.
Another employee, Mohd Rizal Kamaral Jaman, 23, who was also at the scene said that he saw the crane driver jumping out of the vehicle before the crash.
He said, based on the information from the driver of the crane, the crane engine suddenly stopped when the driver was making a turn.
“So he said he had to jump out after he lost control of the vehicle.
“He also said he wanted to avoid damaging other vehicles, which is why he allowed the crane to hit the building.”
He added the crane’s engine was able to function again two hours later and was removed by the driver.
