Covid-19 Update: Sarawak records 18 more positive cases, bringing total to 306

KUCHING, Apr 8: Sarawak registered 18 more Covid-19 cases today (Apr 8), bringing the total number of positive cases in the state to 306.

State Disaster Management Committee deputy chairman Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah informed that 14 cases were treated at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), three cases in Sibu Hospital and one case in Miri Hospital.


“Today, Sarawak also recorded 67 person-under-investigation (PUI) cases, bringing the cumulative cases to 1,864.

“Of the number, 1,503 cases were negative and 55 cases are still awaiting laboratory test results,” he told a daily press conference on Covid-19 today.

For the statistics of new PUI cases according to districts, 38 cases were recorded in Kuching, followed by Samarahan (14), Miri (5), Betong (3), Bintulu (2), and one each in Bau, Saratok, Sarikei, Sibu and Marudi.

Meanwhile, Abdul Karim said that the Movement Control Order (MCO) compliance rate in Sarawak has achieved 96.5 per cent up to date.

“In the past 24 hours, police arrested 25 people in Sarawak for not adhering to the MCO and 71 people have been charged in court.

“Of the number, 57 individuals have pleaded guilty, while 16 people have been imprisoned and 35 people were issued compound,” he added.

Of the 25 arrests made of April 7, Kuching recorded six arrests followed by Mukah (5), Sibu (4), two each in Miri, Marudi and Lawas, as well as one each in Padawan, Kota Samarahan, Serian and Lubok Antu.

On cleaning and disinfecting operation at public places, Local Government and Housing Ministry together Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) have and will continue to carry out the operation in 51 areas categorised under Red and Orange zones until Apr 14.

In Kuching, the operations will cover 22 areas, followed by Miri (8), Samarahan (7), Sibu (4), Sarikei (4), Limbang (3), Betong (2) and Sri Aman (1).

Abdul Karim updated that today (Apr 8), there were 33 more Sarawakians returning to the state have been placed at designated quarantine centres as person-under-investigation (PUI) to undergo compulsory 14-days quarantine.

This brings the total number of individual undergoing quarantine to 318.

“In Kuching, a total of 86 people are placed at Hock Lee Hotel and 87 persons at Rajah Court Dormani.

“In Miri, 89 people are quarantined at Mega Hotel, 34 people at Somerset Hotel and nine at Ostay Inn, while 13 are placed at Purnama Hotel, Limbang,” he said.

Abdul Karim emphasised that the Covid-19 situation in the state was still under control with 96.5 per cent compliance rate for MCO.

“All agencies involved in the MCO operation will continue to implement measures and surveillance in Sarawak to curb the spread of Covid-19 including sanitisation operations at all areas in the Red and Orange Zone,” he assured. —DayakDaily
