BETONG, March 29: The quarantine centre for novel coronavirus (Covid-19) here is almost ready.

State Disaster Management Committee chairman, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, said the Pusat Sumber Pembangunan Desa Layar has been chosen as the quarantine centre.

“Workers of a private company are now putting in the final touches to get the centre up and running. It could accommodate 24 persons comfortably at any one time.

“It is located far away from populated areas and the location is strategic,” he said when visiting the progress of the quarantine centre set up Betong Hospital.

He was briefed on the preparation of the quarantine centre by Dr Johny Pangkas.

On another note, Uggah, who is also Sarawak deputy chief minister, said Betong has recorded eight positive cases of Covid-19.

He said four of the patients were from Kedah and one from Kuala Lumpur, who were participants of the Sri Petaling Mosque tabligh gathering and flew in to Betong, where they spent a few days moving around in Debak.

The other three patients were locals. All the patients have been admitted to Sibu Hospital, he continued.

Uggah said Betong has recorded 21 Patient-Under-Investigation (PUI) cases to date.

On another note, he added that there was a proposal to turn the Dewan Rentap and the Rumah Dayak in Betong as additional quarantine centres should the need arise.

He said some 210 people in the division have received the quarantine order.

At the visit, Uggah presented 12,000 face masks to Betong Hospital and the Debak sub-district, to be distributed to the frontliners. — DayakDaily
