Covid-19 positive 16-year-old triggers 19 more infections sparking new Jalan Baji cluster

KUCHING, March 31: A 16-year-old youth in Sarikei who has tested positive for Covid-19 has infected 19 more as of today giving rise to a new cluster dubbed as Jalan Baji cluster.

In a press statement today, Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said the youth was found to be reactive to the RTK Antigen test on March 25 and was admitted to a quarantine and low-risk treatment centre in Sarikei for treatment and isolation.


On March 28, the youth which is Case 15,394 was confirmed positive for Covid-19 following an rT-PCR test.

As a result of active case detection and screening of all close contacts, family members and casual contacts to this index case, an additional 19 positive cases were detected out of 29 individuals who were screened.

Out of the 29 individuals tested, five were found to be negative while another four still waiting for their test results.

SDMC speculated that since the youth has yet to start working, he may have contracted the illness from the community at the residential area of Jalan Baji, Sarikei.

Apart from the Jalan Baji cluster in Sarikei, the other two new clusters reported today are Aman Roundabout Cluster in Sibu and Jalan Kingsway Cluster in Miri. -DayakDaily
