KUCHING, Feb 28: There is no Covid-19 outbreak in Serian town despite the district seeing a surge of 203 new cases today, says Serian MP Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem.

In verifying this, he said the record high figure in Serian out of the total of 426 new cases reported statewide has aroused much concern among residents, but he urged townspeople not to panic.

“As reported today, Sarawak recorded 426 positive Covid-19 cases. Of that number, 203 is from Serian. I have received numerous phone calls especially from Serianians who are very concerned about the situation.

“I have checked with the relevant authorities and it is confirmed that 191 of the 203 cases are at the Semuja Immigration Detention Depot and not in Serian town,” he said in a statement today.

Riot, who is also Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) deputy president, pointed out that the other two active clusters in Serian namely the Kampung Chupak Cluster and Kampung Batu Gong Cluster are both in the Siburan sub-district which is some 35 kilometres away from the town.

Despite that, he urged all Serian residents to continue to observe standard operating procedures (SOPS) and not to be complacent.

“Even though the 191 positive cases happened at the Semuja Immigration Depot Centre and the situation is currently under control, I urge all Serianians to be extra cautious and don’t take things for granted. Please strictly adhere to and follow the SOPs,” said Riot. ā€” DayakDaily
