Covid-19: Offshore worker latest imported case in Sarawak today

KUCHING, Aug 22: One imported Covid-19 case was reported in Miri today involving a scaffolder offshore worker who returned from Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), in a statement today, thus informed that this brought the state tally of positive cases to 688.

The 55-year-old local man, Case 688, had departed Amsterdam on Aug 14 and transited in Doha, Qatar before continuing his flight to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and arrived on Aug 15.  He had stayed overnight in Kuala Lumpur before boarding a flight back to Miri on Aug 16.


Upon arrival at Miri Airport, he was immediately transferred to a hotel in Miri to undergo the compulsory 14-day quarantine. He did not show any symptoms.

Prior to returning to Malaysia, the case had informed that he had observed quarantine and rT-PCR swab for Covid-19 at Amsterdam. The test result was negative.

At Kuala Lumpur, he also took the RTK Antigen test and the result was also negative. While undergoing quarantine at Miri’s hotel, the man took the first swab test on Aug 18 and the test result on Aug 21 returned positive of Covid-19.

The case was admitted to an isolation ward of Miri Hospital on the same day for further treatment. Contact tracing for the case and further investigation is currently ongoing.

As today’s case is imported, only Kuching district is labelled a yellow zone.

Meanwhile, SDMC also declared that the Kuching Construction Company Cluster has ended with no new cases reported in the past 28 days.

The cluster was identified on July 25 with two positive cases involving local employees of a construction company in Kuching here.

As such, the number of active clusters in Sarawak has decreased to six namely the Engineering Company Cluster with eight cases, Mambong Cluster (7), Sentosa Cluster (31), Melbourne PUI Cluster (3), Satok Market Cluster (4) and Seri Alam Bintulu Cluster (4).

SDMC also reported that one recovery and discharge was recorded at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) today. With that, the total number of recovered cases in Sarawak is 662 or 96.22 per cent of total positive cases so far.

Seven patients are still receiving treatment with one each in SGH, Sibu Hospital and Miri Hospital while four in Bintulu Hospital.

Sarawak also reported three new persons-under-investigation (PUI) with six cases awaiting laboratory test results.

In addition, 139 more person-under-surveillance (PUS) have been checked in to identified hotels to undergo quarantine.

As of today, there were a total number of 765 individuals undergoing quarantine in 14 hotels throughout the state. —DayakDaily
