Covid-19: New logging camp cluster in Song reports 21 new cases

KUCHING, March 14: A newly declared logging camp workplace cluster at the area of Sungai Begalak, Song has reported a spike of 21 Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours.

According to the reports by State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), the cumulative number of positive cases related to the Begalak Cluster now stands at 49.


The index case of this cluster involved a 57-year-old Sarawakian male who is one of the employees in the logging company who was detected through symptomatic screening on March 10.

Investigations found that the patient might have gotten the infection from Song town area as he did not have travelling history to other districts since Dec 28, 2020.

A total of 335 close contacts have been screened where 222 were negative results and 64 more samples are awaiting laboratory test results.

Out of the 49 positive cases, three have been admitted to the Sibu Hospital and the remaining 46 patients were admitted to the Kapit Quarantine and Low-Risk Treatment Centres for isolation and treatment purposes.

With that, Sarawak now has a total of 29 active clusters. Today, 12 of them including the Begalak Cluster reported new cases while the other 17 did not. — DayakDaily
