Covid-19: Malaysia’s death toll rises to 8

KUCHING, March 21: Malaysia has reported two additional casualties related to the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak this evening.

Data compiled by the Crisis Preparedness Response Centre (CPRC) confirmed that the number of cumulative death cases due to Covid-19 in Malaysia has increased to eight.

The latest figure was on top two Sarawakians and a man from Malacca, reported to have died from Covid-19 earlier today.

Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the seventh casualty involved a 57-year-old man who has a history of travelling to Vietnam and was exposed to a Covid-19 patient from the Sri Petaling Mosque tabligh gathering cluster.

The victim was the 290th patient tested positive for Covid-19 and admitted to Kuala Lumpur Hospital on March 18.

“The man had experienced fever, cough and sore throat for a week and was put on breathing aid after his health condition deteriorated. The patient succumbed to his sickness and breathe his last at 3.22pm today,” he said in a statement.

Dr Noor Hisham revealed that another casualty this evening involved a 69-year-old man, also from the tabligh gathering. The patient was admitted to Tumpat Hospital in Kelantan on March 16 after experiencing fever on March 12.

The patient was then transferred to Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital in Kota Bharu on March 18, after his health condition worsened and had to be supported by respiratory aid the next day. The patient passed away at 4pm, he continued.

Earlier, Sarawak Disaster Management Committee said two patients had died from Covid-19. The victims were a 79-year-old woman and her 40-year-old daughter, both from Kuching.

The committee added that the mother died at a private medical centre at 2 am on March 18, while her daughter died at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) today at 1 pm.

Dr Noor Hisham revealed that the septuagenarian was the fifth casualty and the 1,031th positive case of Covid-19, while her daughter was the sixth casualty and case number 1,032. — DayakDaily
