Covid-19: Kuching above 1k cases for second time, Sarawak second highest record refreshed to 2,427

KUCHING, Aug 28: Covid-19 cases in Kuching alone has breached the 1,000th mark again with 1,155 registered today, coming second after the highest record of 1,601 on Aug 20.

Statewide, Sarawak’s 2,427 cases today was its third consecutive log of over 2,000 cases daily following 2,024 cases on Aug 26 and 2,224 yesterday (Aug 27).


Subsequently, Sarawak’s second-highest record of daily caseloads was replaced again with a newer number on this day.

According to State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) reports, the cumulative number of cases in Sarawak now stands at 109,723.

In terms of districts aside from Kuching, only Serian and Sibu registered three-digit figures today, with 434 and 147 cases respectively.

Other districts that saw double-digit case numbers were Samarahan (93), Bau (80), Simunjan (63), Bintulu (59), Tebedu (59), Song (48), Pusa (32), Betong (31), Selangau (26), Miri (21), Tatau (21), Limbang (20), Saratok (19), Subis (17), Kapit (15), Beluru (15) and Mukah (13).

The remaining districts with new infections included Sarikei (9), Lundu (9), Lubok Antu (8), Belaga (7), Kabong (7), Sri Aman (5), Asajaya (5), Marudi (2), Dalat (1), Pakan (1), Julau (1), Sebauh (1) and Kanowit (1).

“Out of the 2,427 patients, 1,804 were detected following close contact screenings where 289 of them were symptomatic.

“Another 300 cases were of individual screenings from active clusters where 49 of them showed signs and symptoms of Covid-19 infection.

“Adding on, 136 cases were of symptomatic screenings, 183 cases were from other screenings in health facilities, two were Import-A cases from Indonesia, and another two were Import-B cases from Johor and Terengganu,” said SDMC in a statement on Covid-19 update today.

Of the total, the committee noted 1,942 cases or 80.02 per cent from Category 1 whereby the patients do not develop any symptoms.

There were 480 patients with mild symptoms from Category 2, two from Category 3 with lung diseases, zero in Category 4, and another three in Category 5 who needed ventilators.

On Covid-19 fatalities, four new cases were reported today, with one each in Bau, Sibu, Kuching and Serian. The death toll was thus pushed to 517.

The four victims were aged from 60 to 91, and all of them had medical histories of comorbidities.

Meanwhile, 611 patients were discharged from hospitals across Sarawak, so there remain 21,976 active cases in isolation or treatment. — DayakDaily
