Covid-19 in Sarawak: 32 new positive cases reported, total now 188

KUCHING, April 1: Sarawak confirmed 32 more Covid-19 cases today (April 1), the highest daily number of positive cases reported in the state since the first recorded case on March 13.

State Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas disclosed that the new cases brings the total number of positive cases in the state to 188.


“All 32 new cases are treated at the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH). Out of the number, 31 cases are from Kuching and one from Samarahan.

“Most of the positive cases reported today comprise those who have undergone screening at the Youth and Sports Complex here,” he told a daily press conference on Covid-19 at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here today.

Since March 21, Uggah disclosed, 2,228 individuals have gone for screening at the said complex with 1,160 samples taken.

“A total of 49 cases tested positive, 771 negative and 340 are still awaiting laboratory test results,” he said.

He thus made another appeal to those who have close contact with any positive cases to undergo screening immediately in order to detect more infections, get treated and break the chain of infection.

Meanwhile, Sarawak also recorded 66 person-under-investigation (PUI) cases today, bringing the cumulative cases to 1,288.

Of the number, 1,045 cases tested negative and 55 PUI cases are still awaiting laboratory test results.

For the breakdown of PUI cases according to districts, Uggah said that Kuching has the most cases at 55 followed by Miri (6), Samarahan (2) and one each in Bau, Sri Aman and Bintulu.

The death toll for Covid-19 in Sarawak stands at eight since the first death reported on March 17.

Fourteen Covid-19 positive cases have recovered and were discharged from hospitals. — DayakDaily
