Covid-19: Daily cases down throughout S’wak but spikes in Kuching

KUCHING, Mar 3: The number of daily Covid-19 cases throughout Sarawak decreased but cases of coronavirus in Kuching increased.

According to the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, Sarawak reported 139 new cases of Covid-19 today.


The figure represented a slight decrease from 159 cases reported yesterday.

At the same time, Kuching reported 29 new cases of Covid-19 today as compared to 18 cases registered yesterday.

“In Kuching, there were 10 cases which involve the Emperoh Jambu Cluster.

“Eight cases are identified from through active contact tracing to positive cases whereby five cases are categorised as local infection and three cases are categorised as import C which were infected in Serian.

“There are three cases identified through individuals who went for screenings at the health clinic and three cases from symptomatic screening at the health clinic.

“There are two cases which involve the Jalan Green Cluster, two cases which involve the Kampung Sungai Maong Cluster and one case involve the Jalan Ho-Pin Cluster,” he told reporters during a press conference while providing the update of the Covid-19 situation in Sarawak today.

Uggah who is also Deputy Chief Minister said the cases today were derived from Sibu (39), Kuching (29), Bintulu (17), Betong (13), Kapit (6), Bau (6), Meradong (5), Miri (5), Selangau (5), Pusa (4), Serian (4), Sebauh (2), Julau (1), Sarikei (1), Asajaya (1) and Song (1).

With the 139 cases reported, the cumulative number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Sarawak has increased to 10,063 cases.

Uggah who is also the Second Finance Minister disclosed that there was also one case of death due to Covid-19 which involved an 85-year-old man in Sibu.

He revealed that the patient passed away on March 1 and had chronic kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes and gout.

Thus, the death toll due to Covid-19 in Sarawak has risen to 84 persons.

On another note, Uggah disclosed that there were 210 Covid-19 patients who recovered and were allowed to be discharged from the health facilities.

Nonetheless, he noted there were 2,242 Covid-19 patients who were still being treated for coronavirus at hospitals and low-risk quarantine centres through Sarawak.

He said there were 144 new cases of Person-Under-Investigation (PUI) while none awaiting the results of the Covid-19 swab test. —DayakDaily
