Covid-19: 2,024 cases, Sarawak above 2k for second time in 1 week

KUCHING, Aug 26: Sarawak’s daily Covid-19 cases have breached the 2,000 mark again in the span of one week, with 2,024 new infections reported today.

According to reports from the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), the highest State record of 2,548 was on Aug 20, which makes today’s figure the second highest of all time.


The cumulative number of cases in the whole of Sarawak now stands at 105,072.

In terms of districts, Kuching, as usual, was at the top of the list with 848 cases, followed by Samarahan, Serian and Sibu registering 200, 198 and 161 cases respectively.

Other districts that saw double-digit case numbers were Bau (80), Song (67), Asajaya (61), Simunjan (54), Bintulu (47), Tebedu (44), Pusa (41), Tatau (26), Mukah (25), Sri Aman (23), Belaga (21), Selangau (18), Betong (15), Kapit (15), Pakan (14), Meradong (13), Sarikei (10) and Subis (10).

The remaining districts with new infections included Lundu (6), Saratok (6), Miri (5), Beluru (5), Dalat (4), Limbang (3), Sebauh (2), Lubok Antu (1) and Matu (1).

“Out of the 2,024 patients, 1,187 were detected following close contact screenings where 58 of them were symptomatic.

“Another 246 cases were of individual screenings from active clusters where 57 of them showed signs and symptoms of Covid-19 infection.

“Adding on, 266 cases were of symptomatic screenings, 323 cases were from other screenings in health facilities, and another two were Import-B cases from Sabah and Selangor,” said SDMC in a statement on Covid-19 update today.

Of the total, the committee noted 1,586 cases or 78.36 per cent from Category 1 whereby the patients do not develop any symptoms.

There were 435 patients with mild symptoms from Category 2, zero from Category 3, one with lung infection while requiring oxygen in Category 4, and another two in Category 5 who needed ventilators.

On Covid-19 fatalities, two new cases were reported today, with both in Kuching, thus raising the death toll to 510.

Fatality case number 509 was a 78-year-old male who had no comorbidities while the 510th death involved an 85-year-old female who suffered from hypertension, diabetes and dsylipidemia.

Meanwhile, 415 patients were discharged from hospitals across Sarawak, so there remain 18,484 active cases in isolation or treatment. ā€” DayakDaily
