Covid-19: 1,206 new infections with 99.59 per cent patients showing no or mild symptoms

KUCHING, Aug 19: Covid-19 cases in Sarawak maintains at four figures, as 1,206 more new infections are recorded today with 99.59 per cent or 1,201 cases are found to be under Category 1 and 2 with no or mild symptoms.

It is worth noting that due to high immunisation rate in Sarawak, there has been a sharp drop in serious Covid-19 cases with one reported in Category 3 (lung infections), three in Category 4 (lung infections and require oxygen) and one in Category 5 (lung infections and require ventilators).

According to the State Disaster Management Committee’s (SDMC) daily updates report on Covid-19 situation in Sarawak today, districts in Southern Region particularly Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Bau, Simunjan and Lundu ranked the top six.

Despite the high number, there were some improvements as cases in Kuching, Serian and Samarahan have dropped to 291, 183 and 126 compared to yesterday at 557, 247 and 228 respectively.

Aside for these three districts that topped the list of daily infections, Covid-19 cases were also recorded in 31 other districts namely Bau (88); Simunjan (83); Lundu (66); Belaga (46); Bintulu (38); Tatau and Asajaya (37 each); Pusa (32); Sibu (31); Mukah (21); Kanowit (20); Selangau (15); Tebedu and Subis (12 each); Sri Aman and Dalat (10 each); Saratok (8); Betong (6); Miri, Kapit and Julau (5 each); Lubok Antu and Song (4 each); Meradong (3); Beluru (2); while Sarikei, Kabong, Lawas, Daro, Sebauh and Telang Usan has one case each.

Today’s new positive cases have pushed the total state tally of positive cases to 92,106.

Of the figure, SDMC also reported that 746 cases were close contacts to positive cases, 236 were detected from screenings in health facilities, 126 were from symptomatic screenings and 95 were linked to existing clusters.

There were also three imported cases involving returnees from Netherlands (one) and Kuala Lumpur (two).

Unfortunately, there were four Covid-19 fatalities recorded with one passed away in Bintulu Hospital and three in Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

In Bintulu Hospital, the victim was a 56-year-old man from Tatau who was pronounced dead on July 26.

In SGH, the deceased aged between 59 and 71 years old were from Kuching and they all suffered comorbidities prior to Covid-19 infection.

Meanwhile, the 646 of new recoveries today is less than new infections recorded, lifting the total recoveries to 80,843 or 87.86 per cent of out of the cumulative confirmed infections.

It was observed that the number of active cases have increased as 10,593 patients are still receiving treatments or being isolated in facilities statewide. — DayakDaily
