Court releases teen suspects from remand in brutal assault case at Tabuan Jaya coffeeshop amidst investigation

KUCHING, Nov 14: Two young men, aged 17 and 19, have been released from remand by the Magistrate’s Court here in connection with a grave assault case involving dangerous weapons.

The police apprehended both suspects on Nov 9 to facilitate investigations into the incident.

On Nov 10, they appeared before Magistrate Syarifah Azura Wan Ali and were granted a four-day remand until Nov 14.

The assault took place on Nov 6, at approximately 11.50pm in front of a coffeeshop in Tabuan Jaya.

The 19-year-old male complainant was attacked by the husband of his friend, one of the suspects, along with several other men who used rattan sticks, iron, glass bottles, and chairs. The altercation originated from the complainant taking the suspect’s wife out for a meal.

Before the incident, the suspect’s wife had contacted the complainant, expressing her hunger and requesting him to bring or buy food for her.

During the altercation, the complainant sustained head injuries, received medical treatment at KPJ Hospital, and filed a police report for further action.

On Nov 9, at approximately 4.50pm, the police arrested the first suspect, a 19-year-old male, at a residence in Kampung Lander Batu 10.

The arrest was made under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

Items seized during the arrest included a Proton Gen 2 Car, one rattan stick, one 61cm samurai sword, one Kwangtao-style machete wrapped in red cloth, one Kwangtao-style machete wrapped in black, red, and yellow cloth (1.21m), and one black Proton key.

On the same day, at about 4.55pm, the police arrested the second suspect, a 17-year-old male, at a house in Kampung Landeh Batu 10. He was detained under Section 148 of the Penal Code.

Investigating Officer Inspector Elvin Manjan Banta applied for the remand, while both suspects were represented by Counsel Ralph Lee. — DayakDaily
