MIRI, Sept 7: Counselling teachers play a crucial role in providing career and employment guidance for their students, assisting them to stay current with emerging occupational patterns and enhancing their future career prospects.
Having said this, Assistant Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research Sarawak (METSR) Dr Annuar Rapa’ee, added that the relationship between the counsellor (counselling teachers) and employment is an inseparable one as it provides students the opportunities and exposures with potential career after graduation.
“Students in Peninsular Malaysia for example, are more exposed on job opportunities and have easy access to valuable experiences through industry mentoring and entrepreneurship programmes at school….but this isn’t the case for students in Sarawak…they have too little exposure,” he opined.
Dr Annuar was speaking at the launching of counsellors as development agents or CADET 2020 a leading hotel here today.
Nearly 80 participants, mainly from the Education Department and industry players in the oil and gas sector, attended the event.
Hence, he called on counselling teachers in Sarawak to be more innovative and creative in equipping their students to the real world of work.
“Early exposure to their career prospects provides opportunities for the students,” he reckoned. adding that with a proper guidance by counselling teachers, job mismatch among graduates could be avoided.
He said today’s young generations are fortunate compared to those prior to them in terms of education opportunities.
“In my days, the opportunities were limited, we don’t have many technical institutes as we have today to opt for,” he recalled.-DayakDaily
