KUCHING, July 15: The community of Kampung Taee in Serian District is grappling with repeated water supply disruptions following a surge in thefts of pipe meters and valves over the past week.
In just the last two days alone, Serian District Council councillor Glenn Ross Ranger @Michael said four pipe meters and valves have been stolen, cutting off water supply to numerous homes and causing distress among residents.
“The stolen components are believed to be targeted for their metal parts, which are then sold to unscrupulous scrap dealers,” he said in a statement today.
Ross has expressed strong condemnation of these “irresponsible acts”, citing not only the inconvenience caused but also the dangers posed by the thefts.
“Not only do they disrupt water supply to entire households, but they also cause flooding, wastage and pose safety hazards, especially to children and the elderly,” he said.
Residents have reported prolonged water interruptions, with authorities noting that the cost of replacing the stolen meters and valves continues to escalate, further straining government resources.
Ross called on residents of Taee and surrounding villages to be vigilant and to immediately report any suspicious activities to the local police or their Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK).
“I appeal to the public to treat this as a serious crime. Water is a basic need, and stealing from the system is stealing from your own community. Every stolen meter or valve causes real hardship for families, especially in this hot season when water is essential,” he stressed. — DayakDaily
