SERIAN, Jan 7: Serian District Council (SDC) has given assurance that the garbage piling affecting several areas in Serian will be removed within a week’s time.

The Council’s acting secretary Collin John Sitin said the rubbish piles were not cleared after the waste collection contractors refused to continue with carrying out the disposal works as their contracts had not been extended.

“The contracts for the five appointed contractors expired on Dec 31, 2022,” he said in a meeting to discuss the garbage collection services with elected representatives for Serian yesterday (Jan 6).

In a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Collin said Kakai, Tarat, Jalan BKi Riih, Jalan Tebakang, Jalan Mongkos and Tebedu District were among the areas badly affected.

However, he added that the Council has taken short-term measures by appointing two contractors from Kota Samarahan as well as using the Public Health Section service to help in removing and clearing the rubbish left behind since Dec 28.

Kedup assemblyman Martin Ben, Tebedu assemblyman Dr Simon Sinang Bada and Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus were present.

In the meeting, the three elected representatives proposed for the contract period of selected contractors be extended from one year to two years, and if possible up to three years depending on their performance. — DayakDaily
