KUCHING, July 3: The Sarawak government has a contingency plan in place for the XXI Malaysian Games (Sukma) to ensure no sports events are disrupted due to venue issues.
Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu, stated that alternative venues are ready to be used if the primary locations are not prepared on time.
“We have a plan B if a venue is not ready. The athletes have been training for a long time, and we do not want them to face any disruptions when the competition day arrives,” he said during a visit to the facilities designated for Sukma XXI Sarawak 2024, as reported by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).
Rentap, who serves as the ‘Chef de Mission’ (CDM) for the Sarawak contingent, emphasised the importance of having the sports venues completed in time to allow athletes to train and adapt to the environment.
“As the head of the contingent, I want our athletes to have the opportunity to train and use these places as soon as possible so they can adapt to the situation at the venues,” he explained.
Rentap expressed confidence that with the support from the officers involved, the secretariat, and the responsible contractors, all the venues in Sarawak will be ready by the set dates.
During his visit, he inspected the current developments at various facilities, including Perduan Stadium, State Stadium, Sarawak Stadium, Sports Village, and Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre.
He also mentioned that visits will continue to all venues involved throughout Sarawak to ensure that preparations are on the right track.
Accompanying Rentap were Abdul Muktalib Mohamad, Sports Officer of the Sarawak State Sports Council and Head of the SUKMA Preparation Unit, and Dr Mohd Shafiq Abdullah, Deputy Chairman of the SUKMA XXI Technical and Competition Committee. — DayakDaily
