KUCHING, May 8: Being agile, responsive and adaptable is key for conventional media such as printed media to surviving the digital era.

Communication and research consultant Dr Toman Mamora said a broad and deep knowledge of the subject matter also plays an important role in adapting to the changing times.

Toman cited statistics from 2012 until 2018 which showed a decline in newspaper circulation in Malaysia.

“This due to the power of social media which has immediacy, which is an asset on social media, while for the newspaper, you have to go through the printing process and wait for the next day.

“Therefore, it is a must for conventional media to reinvent itself such as broadening its scope in the framework such as using hyperlinks to livestreaming events, video and many others,” he said.

Toman said this during the journalism seminar and workshop titled “Meeting of the Minds: How we can move forward the newspaper industry or journalism in Sarawak” organised by Pertubuhan Wartawan Bebas Kuching (Pewarta) held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) today.

He added when addressing social media challenges, conventional media should be able to get to their targeted audience’s level of understanding.

“Meaning that you must emphathise with your target audience, especially the youngsters,” he said. — DayakDaily
