SIBU, June 12: Travel by road between the satellite town of Sibu Jaya and Sibu town centre will be much shorter when the proposed Lanang-Sibu Jaya Road is completed between two and two-and-a-half years’ time.

Work on the 6km dual carriageway road has started, announced Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg here today.

“It (the road) has just been tendered out. Now, construction has already started,” said Abang Johari to reporters covering his visit to Assistant Minister of Education and Technological Research Dr Annuar Rapaee’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house.

Abang Johari had announced this RM60 million initiative during a meet-the-people session at Sibu Jaya last year.

Sibu Jaya is about 23km from Sibu town centre. When the road is completed, the distance would be shortened to less than 10km.

Apart from visiting Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar, Abang Johari also visited Temenggong Datuk Wan Hamid Edruce Tuanku Mohamad and former Igan MP Datuk Abdul Wahab Dolah.

On his Hari Raya Aidilfitri visits in Sibu, Abang Johari said it had been the tradition for the chief minister to visit political and community leaders during festive occasions.

“It is our tradition to visit our friends,” he said.

Accompanying Abang Johari were Petra Jaya MP Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Coastal Road Assistant Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi and Assistant Minister of Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali. — DayakDaily
