KUCHING, Aug 20: The construction of an access road to Bukit Sadok in Betong, where legendary Iban warrior Rentap has his fortress, as well as where a replica of his fortress will be located, will start this year and be completed in two years, said Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
Uggah, who is also Infrastructure and Port Development (MIPD) Sarawak Minister, revealed this at a meet-the-people session at Rh Mendit Unsu in Penom in Spaoh today, according to an MIPD statement.
“One of Betong Division Development Agency’s (BDDA) main objectives is in the tourism sector.
“We want to capitalise on the legend of our great warrior and nationalist, Rentap.
“Our Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Rahman Johari Tun Openg (Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) has allocated to us a sum of RM16 million to develop our tourism programme,” he said.
“Foremost on our plan is to build an access road to Bukit Sadok where Rentap had his fort.
“Then we will build a replica of Rentap’s fortress from where he had fought against the White Rajah soldiers to eliminate him.
“We plan to begin the construction of both projects sometime this year and for them to be ready in two years’ time.”
Uggah addd that in the meantime, suitable longhouses to offer homestay facilities will be identified.
“At the same time, we will promote local handicrafts and cuisine besides the pristine fauna and flora in the division,” he said.
Also present at the event were Betong MP Dr Richard Rapu, political secretary to the Premier, Roseline Mapong Sabai, and other guests. — DayakDaily
