KUCHING, Jan 3: The severe traffic congestion along Kuching-Samarahan Expressway is anticipated to improve as the ongoing premix laying work at the roundabout near Sama Jaya Free Industrial Zone here is expected to be completed by Friday (Jan 6).

In a statement today, Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak disclosed that the project is currently ahead of schedule with physical progress at 48 per cent as of December 2022.

“The appointed rescue contractor is working diligently to complete the upgrading works along Kuching-Samarahan Expressway (of) which the contract period will run for 15 months and is scheduled to be completed by January 2024.

“(However) With good progress, the project is expected to be completed by November 2023,” it said.

Noting the traffic congestion issues in the vicinity, JKR Sarawak pointed out that the construction activity has now reached the critical phase of laying sub-base/road base at the said roundabout near Sama Jaya Free Industrial Zone.

“Due to the rough surface, the smoothness of the traffic flow has been badly affected.

“To mitigate traffic congestion during peak hours, JKR Sarawak has instructed the contractor to carry out premix works at night. The laying of the premix at the roundabout no. 4 is expected to be completed by Jan 6 (Friday),” it said.

JKR Sarawak added that they will make further improvements on the traffic management along the stretch which will hopefully ease the traffic congestion experienced during the construction period.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused due to the construction works.”

JKR Sarawak also advised the public to follow traffic updates, directions and signages erected along the construction area. — DayakDaily
