KUCHING, Feb 27: A total of 30 citizenship applications were submitted—comprising 20 illegitimate children, five under guardianship, and five adopted children—during the latest meeting of the Sarawak Special Committee on Citizenship Status (JKKSK).
In a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) news report, Minister of Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah stated that last year, the committee reviewed 36 citizenship applications under Article 15A of the Federal Constitution.
She emphasised that while the committee facilitates and verifies applications, the final decision rests with the federal government.
“We can make recommendations, but the decision lies with the Ministry of Home Affairs,” she said during a press conference following the Sarawak-Level Special Committee on Citizenship Status under Article 15A Meeting today.
JKKSK ensures that every application undergoes a thorough review before being forwarded to the relevant authorities for a final decision.
“This initiative aims to assist eligible individuals in obtaining citizenship while addressing any concerns related to citizenship status, particularly among children in Sarawak,” she added.
Also present was the permanent secretary of the ministry Datu Felicia Tan Ya Hua. — DayakDaily
