KUCHING, Jan 19: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg believes that the town of Lachau has the potential to be developed into an organic produce town.

“The town of Lachau can be turned into a food processing area as there is much agricultural produce there.

“I have informed the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) to arrange for a place to process fruits.

“I have seen a bunch of rambutan which was just sold for RM1 and there were many bunches there.

“We hope that those rambutan can be processed into canned food.

“Besides, there is also durian which we can process into durian paste.

“Other than that, there is also sour eggplant (terung asam) and vegetables which we can process for export.

“Those vegetables are available in large quantities,” he observed during a stopover at Lachau town while on the way to Simanggang today. He was heading to Simanggang to officiate at a ground-breaking ceremony for the waterfront upgrading work project there today.

Among those accompanying Abang Johari during his trip to Simanggang were Batang Lupar MP Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim, Assistant Minister of International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Malcolm Mussen Lamoh, Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan, Simanggang assemblyman Datuk Francis Harden, State Secretary Datuk Amar Jaul Samion, and Deputy State Secretary Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Marzuki. — DayakDaily
