KUCHING, Oct 18: Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang has been elected as the new Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Youth chief for 2025-2028 term, after garnering 52 votes to defeat Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon, who received 33 votes, at the party’s 6th Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC) held at Riverside Majestic Hotel here today.

Gira, who takes over from Datuk Snowdan Lawan after his three-term tenure, described the contest as a “family affair” within PRS, emphasising unity and inclusivity moving forward.

“These contests among ourselves are only within the family and the party. I would like to thank all the delegates who supported me.

“Even though not everyone made it, I will try to accommodate them within our Youth wing,” he told reporters after his victory.

Outlining his vision for the wing, Gira said his leadership will be guided by his manifesto, which focuses on narrowing the gap between leaders and grassroots members, empowering the younger generation and ensuring transparency in decision-making.

“My priority is to ensure our party leaders remain close to the grassroots. The Youth and Pewaris (PRS’ new wing for those aged between 18 and 28) must work closely with the main body to strengthen the party,” he said.

He added that he aims to focus on leadership development, digital skills and entrepreneurship among youth across regions.

“I want to create leadership among our youth through training in leadership, business and digital literacy. We will bring these programmes region by region to build capable and confident young leaders,” he asserted.

Gira also pledged to promote inclusivity within the wing, highlighting the importance of representation from all regions and ethnic backgrounds, including the Iban, Bidayuh and Orang Ulu communities.

Gira, 55, is a professional engineer and PRS Supreme Council member for 2022-2025 term. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Glasgow, United Kingdom.
