SIBU, May 7: DAP Sarawak hopes to complete seat negotiations with Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) for the 15th General Election (GE15) as soon as possible.

State DAP chairman, Chong Chieng Jen in indicating this at a press conference today said the negotiations should not take too long as GE15 is approaching.

He had earlier attended a dialogue session between the State DAP committee and DAP Sibu grassroot members.

“With have another round of negotiations. We hope to conclude them as soon as possible as time is running (out),” he said.

Chong said the main goal of the negotiations was on how they could capture the 18 seats currently held by GPS.

“This is very important as one seat for GPS is one seat for Umno. That is our main goal for the negotiations so that we can capture as many seats that GPS is holding as they had proven themselves to be supportive of Umno and also their bedfellow,” he claimed.

He acknowledged that it would not be an easy task to capture any of the 18 seats even if all Opposition parties come together.

Chong however said Umno must not be given a second life when GE15 comes.

“We need a national party to take on Umno in GE15. GPS no matter how strong they are, cannot provide a check and balance against Umno due to their political strength and they (GPS) cannot effect national policies,” he asserted.

Chong warned that a win for Umno in GE15 would do no good for the State, which is still trying to regain its rights under MA63.

Among those present at the press conference were Lanang MP Alice Lau, Sibu MP Oscar Ling and former Bukit Assek assemblywoman, Irene Chang. — DayakDaily
