KUCHING, Nov 28: Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen has reiterated his call for the federal government to raise the e-invoicing threshold to RM500,000, asserting that the current threshold of RM150,000 unfairly burdens small traders and hawkers.
Chong said that while the Ministry of Finance’s implementation of the e-invoicing system aims to address leakages in tax and customs revenue, it should not impose excessive costs and administrative hurdles on micro-businesses.
“The current threshold of RM150,000 is gross income, before deduction of costs,” said Chong in a statement today.
He highlighted that raising the threshold would spare hawkers and other small business operators from unnecessary trouble and costs while still allowing the government to meet its revenue objectives.
Chong, who is also Stampin MP also took a swipe at Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) for targeting him over the issue. He alleged that SUPP’s criticism reflects its diminished relevance at the federal level.
“On the attack of SUPP against me on this issue, it only goes to show that the SUPP is now an irrelevant party so far as the federal government is concerned.
“It seems that it has no avenue to speak to the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) ministers and deputy ministers in the federal government and thus, on this e-invoicing policy, its leaders pick on me instead of fighting for a better solution and policy for the people,” Chong asserted. — DayakDaily
