KUCHING, Dec 14: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will not interfere with the people’s choice for the next Sarawak party chief.

He has given his assurance that the next state chairman will be chosen based on the voices of the majority.

Anwar said that even though he has the final say on the appointment based on his capacity as party president, he believed the responsibility to pick the next Sarawak PKR chief should lie in the hands of the state members.

“According to the party constitution, I am to discuss with all division chiefs. Although as president I have the power (to appoint state chairman), I’ll ‘transfer’ that power to the state.

“Not just Sabah and Sarawak, but all the other states,” he was speaking to reporters after chairing a closed-door meeting with the state PKR division chiefs at a hotel here today.

A total of 27 out of 29 divisional chiefs in Sarawak were present at the meeting.

Anwar (left) met with Baru at Parliament on Monday. The PKR chief accepted Baru’s reason for exemption from the meeting.

Anwar acknowledged that Works Minister Baru Bian, who is the incumbent state PKR chairman, could not attend the meeting because the latter had other official engagements in Lawas. Baru had informed the party president on Monday.

“The announcement (of new state chairman) will be made by tomorrow (Dec 15). I think there is not much complications,” he said.

Miri MP Dr Michael Teo, who is also Miri PKR chief, is contesting against Baru for the Sarawak chairman post.

Anwar also said that he would make another visit to Sarawak to strengthen the party machinery in preparation for the next state election due 2021, once all matters regarding the party election is settled. — DayakDaily
