Chinese national working in Kuching loses RM100k to currency exchange scam

KUCHING, Dec 24: A Chinese national in his 30s, working as a manager at a private company, has lost about RM100,000 after falling victim to currency exchange scam.

Sarawak Commissioner of Police Dato Mancha Ata revealed that in late August this year, the victim reported becoming acquainted with an unknown individual (the suspect) through social media.

During their interactions, the victim expressed his intention to exchange Malaysian Ringgit for Chinese Yuan for personal use in China.

“Throughout their correspondence, which primarily took place via WhatsApp, the victim conducted multiple money transactions with the suspect.

“By the end of December 2024, the victim had transferred a total amount of approximately RM100,000 to a bank account provided by the suspect.

“The victim realised he had been scammed when the suspect became unreachable after the transactions had been completed,” he said in a statement today. — DayakDaily
