KUCHING, May 8: Touching drawings filled with hugs, smiles and treasured family moments earned recognition for 30 students from kindergartens and primary schools in a poster competition organised by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS), celebrating the special bond between grandparents and grandchildren.
The prize presentation ceremony for the “My Grandparents, My Heart, My Hero” competition honoured winners from 14 primary schools and two kindergartens.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said each poster reflected heartfelt messages of love and appreciation for grandparents.
“Each poster is not just a drawing. It is a message of love, a message of appreciation, a message from the heart. When I look at the posters, I see smiles, hugs, family moments and beautiful memories between grandchildren and grandparents. Some drawings are simple, but the love inside them is very deep and touching,” he said at the ceremony held at MBKS headquarters today.
He described grandparents as “real heroes” who quietly make sacrifices, offer unconditional love, and instil important values such as kindness, patience and respect.
“Many of our grandparents went through difficult times in life so that today we can live better lives. They worked hard, struggled and sacrificed for their families. Because of them, we have the opportunities we enjoy today,” he said.
Wee added that the competition supports MBKS’ efforts under the Kuching South Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) Action Plan to nurture caring, respectful and compassionate children.
He also said MBKS is committed to building a city where senior citizens continue to feel respected, valued and included through its Ageing Action Plan.
“A caring city is not measured only by buildings, roads or technology. A truly caring city is measured by how we treat our children and our elderly,” he said. — DayakDaily
