MARUDI, Dec 11: The older folks may be worried about the non-stop rain flooding the village, but children seem to be having fun, especially since it is happening during the school holidays.

More than 600 villagers from the 100-door Long Bemang longhouse in Apoh region have been hit by flood since Nov 30.

Despite this inconvenience, children were seen swimming in the floodwater, while the womenfolk continued their daily chores like cooking outdoors, even though their feet were covered in water.

As of 3pm today, flood levels at the Kayan longhouse rose to 2 feet as rainwater from the upper reaches of the Apoh river gushed down to the village.

Fire and Rescue department (Bomba) Sarawak acting deputy director Tiong Ling Hii said a team from the Marudi Fire station, police, and Civil Defence Force (JPAM) had been sent to Long Bemang to check on the situation.

The Welfare Department has been informed and relief assistance has been distributed to the flood victims. —DayakDaily
