KUCHING, March 26: The carbon sector is emerging as a potential catalyst for rural communities in Sarawak, offering a pathway to generate income while safeguarding the State’s forests and mangroves.
According to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the development of the carbon industry could serve as a viable alternative to the declining timber sector, particularly for rural communities such as those in Kampung Selalang and its surrounding areas.
He said the move represents a strategic effort to ensure the continued preservation of forest and mangrove ecosystems, while creating new economic opportunities for local communities.
“This effort not only generates economic value, but also helps preserve natural ecosystems that are vital to environmental balance,” he said, while attending the Kuala Rajang Constituency Aidilfitri Celebration, held at the Kampung Selalang Community Hall here recently.
Len Talif also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening rural infrastructure, including the development of entrepreneur hubs as well as sports and recreational facilities to spur local economic activity.
He added that the provision of basic amenities such as roads, clean water supply, electricity and reliable telecommunications remains crucial in supporting sustained development in rural areas.
“Close cooperation between community leaders, local representatives and residents is essential to ensure that development plans are implemented smoothly and benefit the wider community,” he said.
He also expressed hope that more development projects would be implemented in Kampung Selalang to raise living standards and expand economic opportunities for residents. – DayakDaily
