KUCHING, May 10: Members of the public are invited to attend a health awareness talk on liver and colon cancer at the Citadines Hotel here on May 24.

Themed “Knowledge of hope, let’s fight cancer together”, the talk organised by CanHOPE Kuching and Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Kuching Central Women’s wing will take place from 6.30pm till 9.30pm.

CanHOPE chose liver and colorectal cancer as its subject of focus due to the high number of patients suffering such diseases coming to the organisation for counselling, said its East Malaysia area manager and counsellor Connie Tan.

“We have requests from the community to organise the talk to keep track on the rise of such cancer diseases.

“We want to bring awareness of these diseases to the community so they have knowledge of what needs to be done when they are diagnosed with the cancer,” she told a press conference to announce the event at SUPP headquarters here today.

Tan lamented that there were cases of family members who didn’t allow the patient to know what stage of cancer the person was suffering. As a result, the patient just lived on without full knowledge of their own conditions.

“This is the reason CanHOPE is organising the talk, so that patients have knowledge and know their own problem. If they are aware of the disease, it could help them to be stronger in facing their condition,” she continued.

Among the speakers included senior consultant oncologist of Parkway Cancer Centre Singapore, Dr Richard Quek Hong Hui, who will present his topic “The Modern Day Cancer Journey Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment”. A general surgeon of Gleneagles Hospital Singapore, Dr Winston Woon, will present his topic “Keyhole Surgery is a way to go”.

SUPP Women chief Kho Teck Wan said that the programme was also part of the party’s Mother’s Day activity.

She called on the public to attend the talk to gain more knowledge of the disease and its medical care management.

The event is sponsored by Parkway Cancer Centre and Parkway Cancer Hospital.

There will be door gifts and goodie bags for the first 200 attendees.Tickets are available at SUPP headquarters and CanHOPE Kuching office during office hours but seats are limited.
