MIRI, Dec 7: N74 Pujut is widely expected to be a hotly contested seat in the 12th Sarawak election.
It was left vacant following Democratic Action Party (DAP)’s Dr Ting Tiong Choon’s disqualification as its assemblyman in February 2020 after a Federal Court decision in Putrajaya over the State Legislative Assembly’s action against him for holding dual citizenship.
For this election, a five-cornered fight is expected for the seat.
So far, those have committed to stand are Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang of Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP), Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB)’s Bruce Chai Khim Cheong, Alan Ling Sie Kiong of ths Democratic Action Party (DAP), Leslie Ting of Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK) and Erick Chin Fen Siong from Parti Aspirasi Rakyat Sarawak (Aspirasi).
In Sarawak’s 11th election, Pujut was won by Dr Ting of DAP.
However, due to his past dual citizenship, Dr Ting was then disqualified as a State assemblyman in 2017.
The first to arrived at the nomination centre this morning to submit their candidacy forms was Yii at 7.52am.
Yii, 56, was accompanied by his proposer, former Pujut assemblyman Andy Chia and Cr Sardon Zainal as his seconder into the nomination centre at the Miri City Council chamber meeting room in Jalan Raja here.
Second to arrive was Chin, 53, at 8.10am.
Meanwhile, Ling, 39, was seen walking into the nomination centre accompanied by his proposer, Thian Sew Meei who is DAP Miri Women chief and Bong Sin Ted, a DAP Miri nramch Commitee member at 8.35am.
Ling was earlier rumoured to stand in Piasau, but was then named to contest in Pujut instead.
Yii was allocated number one to enter at 9am, followed by Ling, Ting, Chin and Chai.
The official list of candidates standing in Pujut will only be known after the nomination period closes at 10am. – DayakDaily
