KUCHING, April 5: The decision to cancel both the Ramadan and Gawai bazaars this year by chief minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is a right move.

Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) Penrissen branch chairman Aloysious Kuyong said it was not right to have such bazaars as of now due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

“To have such a bazaar is not a problem but as of now, due to Covid-19, it is really not suitable,” he said when commenting through WhatsApp.

He believed that the authority knows what they are doing, when coming to a decision to cancel Ramadan and Gawai bazaars this year.

Penghulu Richard Daho said it was a wise decision by the chief minister.

“It’s very unfortunate for our Dayak and Muslims brothers, but honestly, I think it’s a wise decision to prevent the spread of Covid 19,” he added.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang

Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said the chief minister made the decision in the best interest of the people.

“It is unfortunate that we cannot enjoy Ramadan and Gawai bazaars this year, but the government is doing the best it can to break the Covid 19 chain,” Lo said.

Miro Simuh

Serembu assemblyman Miro Simuh said it is a good move by the government to prevent people from gathering.

“I don’t think that this Covid-19 will disappear so fast as the number keeps increasing, so I hope that the people understand that human life is more important than having the bazaars,” he added.

Abang Johari, at a press conference in Miri today, said there will not be any Ramadan or Gawai bazaars in the state this year, as part of the effort to curb the Covid-19 outbreak. — DayakDaily
