Canadian mining association keen to collaborate, invest in Sarawak’s mineral industry

KUCHING, June 8: The Canadian Mining Association of British Columbia has expressed interest in collaborating and investing in the development of the mineral industry in Sarawak.

This was conveyed to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, who led a Sarawak delegation to a meeting with the Canadian Mining Association in Vancouver, Canada, on Friday (June 7).

According to a press statement today, Awang Tengah emphasised that the engagement and sharing session with the Mining Association of British Columbia provided insights to the delegate in the formulation of Sarawak’s mining policy, strategies and direction as well as the required legal and institutional framework.

The mining sector in British Columbia has created more than 40,000 jobs and generated $7.4 billion to the gross domestic product (GDP), in which $3.7 billion was spent for the development particularly to improve the livelihood of the First Nation People or the natives of Canada.

The Mining Association of British Columbia plays a critical role in transforming the mining sector into a dynamic and state-of-art, inclusive and responsible industry aligning to the principles of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Awang Tengah, who is also the Minister for International Trade, Industry, and Investment Sarawak, pointed out that this aligns with Sarawak aspiration to develop the mineral mining industry into a vibrant economy based on the principles of ESG and SDGs.

The mining sector is one of the six key economic sectors under Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

The delegation also paid a courtesy visit to the Malaysia Consulate General office in Vancouver, which has expressed commitment to collaborate with Sarawak government to promote trade, investment and tourism opportunities in Sarawak.

Among those in the delegation were Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development Sarawak Datuk Len Talif Salleh and Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63, and State-Federal Relations), Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Syed Aman Ghazali.

Other members of the delegation are State Attorney-General Datu Saferi Ali, State Financial Secretary Dato Sri Dr Wan Lizozman Wan Omar, Economic Planning Unit director Datu Lester Matthew, and Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development permanent secretary Datu Abdullah Julaihi. — DayakDaily
