KUCHING, Oct 28: Three projects being undertaken by Cahya Mata Sarawak (Cahya Mata) are set to have a significant positive impact on Sarawak’s economic landscape as well as on the communities surrounding them.

Speaking during the Cahya Mata Media Night held here on Monday (Oct 27), its Group Managing Director, Dato Sri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman Abdul Taib, said that one of the projects is the RM673 million Mambong Clinker Line 2.

“This new plant will more than double our annual capacity from 900,000 metric tonnes to 1.9 million metric tonnes, eliminating the need for clinker imports as well as ensuring a continuous and reliable supply of clinker to meet Sarawak’s high demand for cement.

“Advanced technology and enhanced operational efficiency mean this facility will also have a reduced overall carbon footprint. Construction work has already commenced, and we expect the new plant to be completed by the middle of 2027,” he said.

The second project is the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) 2 project, worth RM550 million, which will significantly boost Kuching’s capacity to host large conferences and gatherings.

“It will be capable of hosting up to 9,500 people, almost double that of BCCK 1. Once completed, BCCK 2 is anticipated to be an economic catalyst for Sarawak given the increasing number of international events hosted in the State,” he said.

He also spoke on the reconnection of electricity supply to the Cahya Mata Phosphates’ Plant, which will enable the completion of testing and commissioning activities prior to the commercialisation of the plant.

“This plant will be the first phosphate facility in the region to be mainly powered by renewable energy and will be capable of manufacturing yellow phosphorus, technical grade phosphoric acid, and food-grade phosphoric acid (FGA) with a purity of 99.9 per cent,” he said.

These three projects, he said, also represent Cahya Mata’s ongoing efforts to embed environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles and considerations throughout its operations, businesses, and corporate social responsibility programmes.

It also supports its community initiatives, including the planting of native tree species through its Arbor Day programme at the Sabal Forest Reserve, and renovation works at Rumah Kanak-Kanak Toh Puan Hajah Norkiah Kuching to provide the children with a safer and more comfortable living environment.

Meanwhile, he also thanked the media as being trusted sources of information to inform and educate the general public, which he described as a reflection of a long-standing strategic partnership that has enabled Cahya Mata to share important information with the public and its stakeholders.

“For all this and more, I thank you, the media, for your continuous support to help Cahya Mata build connections with the wider community and for highlighting what we do and have achieved to the public and our shareholders,” he said. — DayakDaily
