Cable theft, vandalism rob people of Internet in Sebauh

SEBAUH, Dec 9: A recent act of vandalism and cable theft at a telecommunications tower site located in LDG Woodman has caused several areas here to experience connectivity issues.

Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) general manager Dr Zaidi Razak disclosed that the authority has received complaints from the affected local community about problems with accessing the Internet.

“We were very concerned so our officers were deployed to the location to investigate the root of the problem.


“They found that the power cables at the telecommunications tower had been cut off. Upon further investigation, they also discovered all cables had been stolen and needed to be replaced,” he said in a statement today.

Cables were cut off and stolen by the offender(s).

Commenting further, Zaidi expressed his disappointment over the vandalism as it had inconvenienced the local community.

He pointed out that both federal and state governments have invested a great deal on connectivity infrastructure and facilities for the people.

“Thus, there must be a sense of shared responsibility among the people to ensure that these infrastructure and facilities are well taken care of.

“We are very saddened by what has happened. I do hope incidents like this will not occur again,” he added.

He gave assurance that works are underway to resolve the issue, while also seeking the local community’s patience and understanding in this matter.

“We have advised the relevant network service provider to lodge a police report with regards to this matter so that actions can be taken against the offender(s),” he added. — DayakDaily
