KUCHING, Sept 26: A bus driver’s split-second decision turned a mid-route emergency into a safe delivery after a heavily pregnant passenger went into labour on a Bas.My Kuching on Wednesday (Sept 23).
Sarawak Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (LPKP) chairman Michael Kong Feng Nian commended the driver’s swift action during the emergency at around 5pm.
“Recognising the urgency of the situation, the bus driver quickly pulled into the parking area in front of Jalan Masjid Healthcare Clinic and rushed inside to alert the medical staff.
“Within moments, several doctors and nurses came onto the bus to assist the mother. With their prompt response and professional care, the baby girl was successfully delivered on board the bus,” he said in a statement today.
Following the delivery, the mother and her baby girl were referred to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for further medical care.
Michael said he had since reached out to the mother and was pleased to learn that both mother and baby were doing well.
Reflecting on the incident, he highlighted how Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licensing and vocational training could prepare drivers to handle unexpected situations.
Michael said the driver was confronted with an unexpected situation but remained calm, acted quickly and responsibly, and brought the mother to a medical facility without unnecessary delay.
“This is why proper licensing and training matter. When you are responsible for carrying passengers, you are entrusted with more than simply getting people from one destination to another. You are entrusted with their safety and well-being,” he said.
He also expressed his appreciation to the driver, medical team and everyone involved in the safe delivery of the baby girl. — DayakDaily
