SRI AMAN, July 31: Several dilapidated schools in Bukit Begunan need to be prioritised for upgrading works to ensure the safety and comfort of students and teachers, says Bukit Begunan assemblyman Datuk Mong Dagang.
He said some of the 12 primary schools in the constituency were still facing ageing infrastructure issues, with certain facilities no longer safe for use.
Among them was Sekolah Kebangsaan Engkranji, where the wooden walls of the staff room were in poor condition and posed a risk of collapsing.
“The same situation can be seen at the teachers’ quarters at Sekolah Kebangsaan Selepong, where the wooden flooring is deteriorating and the quarters are no longer safe for teachers to stay in,” he was quoted as saying by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) during the launch of the Sarawak Dilapidated Schools Redevelopment Project funded under the RM1 billion allocation at Sekolah Kebangsaan Melugu here today.
He also highlighted the issue of an old building at Sekolah Kebangsaan Tanjung Bijat, which he said should be demolished as it was no longer safe.
Although the school had received a new building, he said the abandoned structure remained a safety hazard and could hinder future development planning for the school.
“I have raised this matter during the State Legislative Assembly sitting previously, and it also received approval from the Asset Disposal Examination Board.
“However, until today, the dilapidated building has yet to be demolished,” he said.
Mong hoped the Sarawak Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) would work together with the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE) to expedite a solution for the benefit and safety of students and teachers.
The ceremony was officiated by Sarawak Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
Also present were Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapa’ee, MEITD Permanent Secretary Datu Adana Jed, Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier Damien Rijek, Sri Aman Resident representative Napoleon Muda Jubin and other distinguished guests. — DayakDaily
