KUCHING, Oct 10: A new 3,190-kilometre undersea cable system will be built under Budget 2026 to connect Sabah and Sarawak with Peninsular Malaysia, marking a major leap in closing the digital gap across the nation’s three regions.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the MADANI Submarine Cable System (SALAM), to be developed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), will cost RM2 billion and serve as a key digital backbone to enhance connectivity, data capacity and internet reliability in East Malaysia.

“The SALAM system will span the seabed from Sedili in Johor to Kuching and Sibu in Sarawak, and continue to Tuaran, Kudat, Pulau Banggi, Sandakan and Tawau in Sabah,” he said when tabling the federal budget in Parliament today.

Anwar said the project represents the federal government’s firm commitment to ensuring that Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia enjoy equal access to high-speed internet and digital opportunities under the MADANI agenda. — DayakDaily
