KUCHING, July 30: The long-cherished dream of over 1,500 residents in the remote interior of Nanga Lasi, Julau, has finally come true with the completion of a long-awaited bridge valued at RM5 million, which is set to be officially launched by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on Aug 9, marking a historic milestone for the rural community.

According to a TVS news report, the bridge, which took two years to complete, is more than just a physical structure—it marks a transformative shift for a community that has long relied on river transport as its primary means of connectivity.

Meluan assemblyman Rolland Duat Jubin described the bridge as a ‘lifeline of development’ that not only changes the physical landscape of the area but opens a new chapter for rural communities.

“This is not just a bridge. It is a symbol of the GPS (Gabungan Parti Sarawak) government’s care for the people in the interior,” he said after chairing the Meluan constituency Chief of Community and Village Chiefs (KMKK) meeting at the Pakan District Office yesterday (July 29).

“It will change the way people live, ease the journey for children going to school, facilitate access to clinics for patients, and help farmers transport their produce more efficiently.”

Beyond enhancing access to essential services such as education and healthcare, the bridge is also expected to catalyse local economic growth, especially for villagers who depend on agriculture.

Many residents are now optimistic about expanding their market reach and improving household incomes.

Rolland added that the Premier’s presence at the officiating ceremony is a strong testament to the government’s commitment to inclusive development and ensuring that no community is left behind.

“I call on all longhouse chiefs and community leaders to attend the upcoming launch as a show of support and gratitude for the government’s efforts to uplift the rural heartlands,” he said.

He further emphasised that the bridge opens a brighter future for the younger generation in Nanga Lasi, who will now have easier access to pursue education and their dreams.

“This development is not the end, but the beginning of more positive changes we hope to see for the people of Meluan,” he said. — DayakDaily
