KUCHING, Jan 24: Boycotting coming general elections is propaganda spread by Barisan Nasional (BN) in their desperate move to retain power, charged a state Pakatan Harapan leader.
“We are aware that there are some parties who are spreading the propaganda to boycott the GE14 (14th General Election).
“But this is also the BN propaganda because with a low turnout, BN will stay in power and will get back a two-thirds majority,” said PKR Women national vice-chief Voon Shiak Ni.
In a press statement today, Voon, who is also national Pakatan Harapan women’s chief for Sarawak affairs, said that BN can easily spring back to power with a low voters’ turnout at or below 70 per cent.
She said BN and UMNO had been in power for nearly 60 years, and if they are still in power, they would amend laws and approve all laws without hassle, including creating more seats in their favour.
“So they (BN and UMNO) will continue to rule, like (Prime Minister Datuk Seri) Najib (Tun Razak) said, UMNO will continue to rule for 1,000 years.”
She thus urged Sarawakians to cast their votes and be agents for change via the ballot box.
“No state in Malaysia has collapsed after a change of government. Selangor and Penang are doing well.
“BN will get votes by hook or by crook, and I would like to emphasise the word ‘crook’. The other side, Pakatan Harapan however, will only get votes from those who vote for us.
“Boycotting the election will only strengthen the corrupt government,” she stressed.
She added that the Opposition’s voice as the critic and check-and-balance of the government will be silenced if BN regains a two-thirds majority which means the people’s voices will also be silenced too. — DayakDaily
