KUCHING, April 29: The Borneo Jazz Festival (BJF) 2022 has extended the deadline for Borneo Jazz Talent Search (BJTS) to May 15, 2022.
BJTS is a platform to provide musicians aged 15 and above from all over Malaysia, Brunei, and Kalimantan to participate in the Jazz, DJ and Open categories.
According to Sarawak Tourism Board (STB), winners of BJTS 2022 will win cash prizes and the opportunity to attend a MasterClass by an international band on June 24 in Miri, Sarawak, and perform during the BJF Stage on June 25.
There will be cash prizes worth more than RM10,000 to be given away for first, second, and third place, and ‘Best Original Composition’.
A jury panel comprising renowned international and Malaysian artistes will evaluate participants based on originality, creativity, musicality, stage presence, and interactivity.
“Interested groups must submit a high-quality performance video of the required repertoire and duration, a written solo artist or band profile and a high-resolution photo on or before May 15. Successful participants will be informed via email,” STB said in a statement today.
STB further informed that by providing submission materials in connection with the contest, all entrants grant the organiser and its affiliated companies the right to use their work and information.
The criteria for each category are as follows:
A. JAZZ CATEGORY
1. Entries are open to all aspiring musicians from Malaysia aged between 15 and 30.
2. Submit a high-quality YouTube video link or MP4 of your solo/band performance of:
– ONE original composition
– ONE jazz standard ‘Stella by Starlight’
– ONE funky standard ‘Get On Up’ by James Brown OR bossa-nova standard ‘Corcovado’ by Antonio Carlos Jobim. (Band performance duration should not exceed 15 minutes)
3. Upload a high-quality video of your band performance on YouTube entitled “BJTS2022 – Artiste name”.
4. Email the below information to: BorneoJazzTalentSearch@gmail.com before 5pm on May 15, 2022.

B. OPEN CATEGORY
1. Open to musicians from Malaysia above 30 years old.
2. Upload a high-quality Youtube or MP4 video of your solo/band performance of:
– ONE original composition
– ONE jazz standard ‘Stella by Starlight’ by Victor Young
– ONE funky standard ‘Get On Up’ by James Brown OR bossa-nova standard ‘Corcovado’ by Antonio Carlos Jobim
(Performance duration must not exceed 15 minutes, and the video must be titled in the following format: BJTS2022 – Artiste Name)

C. DJ CATEGORY
Open to all aspiring DJs from Malaysia aged between 15 and 30.
1. ONE original composition (duration of the composition should not exceed 15 minutes)
2. ONE production of a 15-minute mixtape which includes an accurate setlist.
3. Upload the track to Soundcloud entitled “BJTS2022 – Artiste name”.
