SARIKEI, Aug 10: The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak is still investigating the cause of a fire that broke out at the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) port in Tanjung Manis here, where one steel-built ship and four wooden-built ships were badly damaged today.
According to the latest update from Bomba Sarawak , there have been no reported casualties in connection with this incident.
The affected vessels were among some 20 fishing trawlers and ships owned by Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) which were docked at the port for repair purposes.
Presently, overhauling work is still being carried out by firefighters to douse the remaining traces of the fire on the decks of the wooden ships with assistance from the Maritime vessel.
Additionally, the police and Sarawak Coast Guard are also present on site to provide support.
The operation involves a team of 12 members from Bomba Tanjung Manis station led by PB Norismendi Mohammad.
The distress call was received at the Bomba operation centre at 5.21 am. Their prompt response was successful in containing the fire’s spread by 6.30am. — DayakDaily
