Body of missing man swept away by currents in Sungai Sarawak found

KUCHING, Jan 16: A body of a missing man who was swept away by river current in Sungai Sarawak last Thursday (Jan 14) was found near Hj Halim wharf in Kampung No 6, this afternoon.

According to Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operation centre in a statement, today, said the body of Awangku Sahiful Awangku Sazali, 33, was found by the search and rescue (SAR) team at 12.05 pm, about 2.5 kilometres from where the victim was last seen.

“The deceased’s remains have been identified by the family members, and the body was later handed over to the police for further action,” it said.

On Jan 14, 2021, the members of the public saw the deceased together with another victim, a woman, being swept away by the river currents in Sungai Sarawak, nearby Kubah Ria Food Court.

However, the woman managed to be rescued by the members of the public, and the deceased continued to be swept by the current, which prompted the SAR operation.

The three-day SAR integrated operation also saw the cooperation from various agencies, namely the Bomba department, Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Malaysian Civil Defense Force (APM), and members of the public.

Meanwhile, Bomba Sarawak director Khirudin Drahman expressed his gratefulness to all the participating agencies who are involved in the SAR operation.

He said the integrated SAR operation saw the cooperation from PDRM, APM, Sarawak Riverboard, together with the members of the public.

“Thanks to all that involved for their cooperation, which is a positive cooperation from all parties in deploying their assets, and has resulted in the success in the find,” he said when interviewed at the location by reporters. –DayakDaily.
