KAPIT, Nov 27: The 75-year-old man who was discovered dead after his vehicle was found submerged in the drain behind Kapit Foochow Association multipurpose hall was identified as retired pastor Bangau Amping.
Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang confirmed that the devastating flash floods in Kapit had caused significant damage to cars and properties, triggered landslides that impacted several longhouses, and claimed the life of Pastor Bangau.
“His car became trapped in a roadside drain as floodwaters rapidly rose,” he said in a statement today.
Wilson expressed his deepest condolences to Pastor Bangau’s family, saying: “On behalf of the people of Kapit, I share in your grief and assure you of our support during this difficult time.”
He also urged the authorities to investigate the root cause of the flash flood and called on residents to stay vigilant, avoid traveling through flooded areas, and prioritise safety.
At 7.15am today, the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Kapit rescue team broke the car window and used a rope to retrieve the victim’s body, which was then transported to the bank of the drain.
There were no signs of life and his body was handed over to the police for further action.
Meanwhile, Bomba Kapit reported that the floodwaters had fully receded by 5.09pm today, with weather conditions improving.
Firefighters continued to monitor the situation, patrolling flood-prone areas, including Kapit Wharf, Rumah Engking longhouse on Jalan Selirik, and along Jalan Tatai Kenyalang Selirik. — DayakDaily
